What causes bloating?
Your Sensitive Gut
People with IBS are often very sensitive to abdominal content, even amounts of food or drink or volumes of gas that might be considered normal. Recent studies have shown that this sensation of abdominal fullness can cause them to contract (lower) the diaphragm and relax the abdominal. This causes the abdomen to protrude.
This may be greater if the abdominal content is increased by a meal or towards the end of the when they are tired. The increase in sensitivity may well be related to emotional tension as well as abdominal content. Thus as far as symptoms of bloating are concerned, think food and mood.
