Keeping a positive mindset is one of the best strategies to look after your health and wellbeing and get through these challenging times.
If you are struggling, or just want some tips for improving your mindset, then read on for these positive thinking strategies from health and wellbeing coach Mike Lawrence, who is also one of the charity’s advisers.
Positive thinking strategies
Positive self-talk.
Think about the language you use towards yourself. Is it negative? Are you too hard on yourself? Try using language in a positive way. For example, instead of, ‘I can’t’, say, ‘I can’, and practise it every day.
Be flexible and learn to change your perspective
Be open to ideas and trying new things. For example, instead of saying you’ve tried everything for your IBS, and nothing works, why not go back to basics and try again with a positive mindset?
Motivate yourself by thinking about positive outcomes for which you are aiming rather than reinforcing negative outcomes you don’t want.
Acknowledge the links between your mind and your physical health. The two are connected and together can have a huge impact on your health and wellbeing.
Seek a balanced lifestyle.
Remember that a positive mindset begins internally — don’t blame external circumstances.
Be more present in the now. Through mindfulness you can discover how to live in the present moment in an enjoyable way, rather than worrying about the past or being concerned about the future.
Remember to make time for yourself. Take five minutes out of your day to feel present and alive.
Develop coping strategies such as reading a book, listening to music, or exercise.
“If you don’t like something change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.’ – Maya Angelou.
Try keeping a gratitude notebook. This will help you feel positive and happy about the good things in your life.
