Do you have IBS and worry about not having access to a toilet when you most need one?
If so, our RADAR key gives you independent access to more than 9,000 toilets in the UK, giving you peace of mind when you’re out and about. But what is a RADAR key, how does it work and where can you get one? In this blog post, we explain more.
What is a RADAR key?
The RADAR key is a large, skeleton key that opens disabled toilets that are part of the National Key Scheme (NKS). It is twice the size of a Yale lock so it’s easier to get out of a bag and into the lock.
How can it help?
The RADAR key allows people with IBS and other health conditions and disabilities to access locked disabled toilets throughout the UK.
Why would I need a RADAR key?
If you have a health condition or disability, finding an accessible toilet that’s clean, tidy and available for you to use can be a challenge, and they are often kept locked. The RADAR Key gives you independent access to locked disabled toilets in the UK.
How do I know if the toilet is a RADAR toilet?
The RADAR key gains you quick access to locked disabled toilets which are part of the National Key Scheme (NKS). The toilets are identified by the NKS initials on the lock.
Are all disabled toilets part of the National Key Scheme?
No, you will need to check. There are around 9,000 in the UK with more opening all the time. Just look for the NKS initials on the lock.
Who can use the toilets?
People with IBS and other health conditions and disabilities can use the toilets. There are many conditions which may require a person to carry a RADAR key, including IBS. Remember that not all disabilities are visible so it is important not to be too quick to judge whether or not a person should be accessing the RADAR key toilet.
Where are the toilets?
The RADAR toilets can be found in restaurants, cafes, shopping centres, bus and train stations, pubs, department stores and many other locations nationwide.
Do I need to ask to use the toilet?
No, the RADAR key scheme makes sure that people who need to use accessible toilets don’t have to ask someone to open the door for them. For people with IBS, this saves them valuable time.
Can someone open the door while I’m in the toilet?
Many of the RADAR toilets have an internal lock which means no one will be able to open the toilet while you are in there. However, in some cases, the lock inside may not work, or may be overridden by the RADAR key. To prevent embarrassment, it is recommended that you knock before opening the door.
How much is the RADAR key?
Our RADAR key is available for £4.75 or can be bought with the ‘Can’t Wait’ card for £9.00.
Where can I buy a RADAR key?
You can order directly from us. Visit The IBS Network website or call 0114 272 32 53.
Is the RADAR key separate to the Can’t Wait card?
Yes, they are two different products but can be purchased together. They both help you gain access to toilets when you most need them.
How is the RADAR key different from the Can’t Wait card?
The RADAR key gives you direct access to locked public disabled toilets. Use your Can’t Wait card when you’re out and about and need a toilet urgently. Show your card in stores, restaurants, shopping centres and ask if you can use their toilet. Although it doesn’t guarantee access, more and more places are recognising the card. It takes the embarrassment out of lengthy explanations and saves you valuable time.
Are the RADAR toilets available abroad?
No, it’s a UK scheme. If you are travelling abroad it may be worth buying a Can’t Wait travel card. The international travel card comes with your ‘Can’t Wait’ card includes the Can’t Wait message in 12 different languages, giving you peace of mind when you’re travelling abroad.
