Is it an infectious disease?
No, IBS is not regarded as an infectious disease. No specific virus, fungus or bacterium has been implicated.
Nevertheless IBS can be initiated by an attack of gastroenteritis, and some doctors in the United States regard bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine to be a major cause of IBS while complementary practitioners may implicate Candida overgrowth or sensitivity.
